Helping children heal after divorce

October 15, 2019. By Lori Denman-Underhill, Content Director for coParenter.

Children’s needs

  • Respect children’s needs for routine, stability, love, and belonging with both parents.
  • Keep conflict low among members of the family.
  • Plan equal access to both parents when the child feels safe with both.

Joint or shared parenting reduces conflict between divorced parents.

Changes after divorce

  • Avoid moving or remarrying too soon after divorce.
  • Consider counseling for children if major changes cannot be avoided.

Time with each parent

Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions can bring loyalty conflicts.

  • Respect children’s time with each parent and avoid interfering with it.
  • Ease transitions between the two homes and communicate non-adversarially about family matters.
