Divorce and Family Court: Judges are People Too
Published on October 15, 2019. Written by Hon. Sherrill Ellsworth (RET).
Judges’ legal experience
Judges typically have practiced law for at least 10 years. Qualifying lawyers are appointed by provincial or federal governments. Most judges did not practice family law before their appointment or election.
Family court decisions
Family court judges decide cases without a jury. Many jurisdictions require judges to apply the Best Interest of the Children standard.
